Paper Title: Seismic response of combined pile-raft foundation-the state of the art review

Design and Analysis of Piled Raft Foundations

Ashutosh Kumar, & Deepankar Choudhury

This chapter presents a state of the art review of the research work carried out by various researchers for analyzing the behavior of combined pile-raft foundation (CPRF) under seismic loading conditions. It emphasizes on the load sharing mechanism of the CPRF components which indicated better performance of this foundation system over conventional group pile foundation during seismic loading. The study shows that lateral loads are resisted by passive resistance provided by the surrounding soil media and explicitly depends on the magnitude of lateral displacement. The input motion characteristics, the natural frequency of the CPRF and surrounding soil media dictate the response of CPRF under seismic loading. The connection rigidity between piles and raft components affects the load- displacement characteristics, bending moment and shear force response of piles. A brief insight on field measurements and a case study on CPRF are highlighted. Finally, key aspects of the design of CPRF subjected to seismic loading are discussed.
