While estimation of seismic loss in terms of damage, downtime and death/injury is of utmost importance and significant progress has been made recently on simplifying the loss estimation procedures, they are still not readily usable in every day engineering design practice. One of the reasons for this is insufficient information regarding the type and density of building components present. The aim of this study is to identify building typology groups and performance group weighting factors to address this need. This involves extracting component construction/installation costs from construction handbooks for a range of different building typologies, grouping components into three performance groups (structural, drift-sensitive non-structural, and acceleration-sensitive non-structural), then grouping the building types based on similar ratios of non structural to the structural performance group component cost. Four different building typology groups are identified, and probabilistic distribution parameters of the performance group weighting factors for each typology group are proposed.
