Dr. Mousumi Mukherjee is presently serving as an Assistant Professor in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Mandi. Before joining IIT Mandi in 2017, she was a post-doctoral fellow at the School of Civil, Mining and Environmental Engineering, University of Adelaide, Australia. She has received her doctoral and masters degrees in Civil Engineering (Geotechnical) from Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur). Her doctoral and post-doctoral research work was focused on mechanical behavior characterization of geomaterials with particular emphasis on instability and rate-dependency phenomena. Her research group is working on the theoretical and computational aspects of geomechanics, which include development of constitutive models for granular materials addressing strain-rate effect and particle shape characteristics, soil instability analysis, DEM based micro-mechanical modeling of granular media, numerical modelling of large deformation problems like debris flows and pile penetration process. These research outcomes are published in more than 40 technical articles in reputed journals and conference proceedings including book chapters and technical reports.  
Dr. Mukherjee was also a member of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE) TC-105 Committee on ‘Geomechanics from Micro to Macro’. She is an active reviewer for several peer-reviewed journals. She is recipient of several awards including “IGS - Prof. C. S. Desai Biennial Award” by the Indian Geotechnical Society (IGS); “SIRE Fellowship”, “MATRICS Grant”, “Early Career Research Award” and “International Travel Support Grant” by the Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB), India; ARC Research Associateship by University of Adelaide, Australia; Visiting Research Fellowship by Kyoto University, Japan. She has been honored as one of the top 75 Indian women leaders in the field of Geotechnical Engineering in 2023 by the Indian Geotechnical Society.
